Week 15

This is the first week of fall and we are ready to cool nights and warm days before the first frost. We are tending to hoop houses and setting up low tunnels to extend the season of some of our tender perennials and warm weather annuals.
Field planting outside of hoops is also still underway with the hopes of over wintering onions, leeks and scallions, and few more rows of salad greens. Our earlier plantings of salad and spinach are starting to size up, and even a few mums are beginning to bloom. As the season progresses, the growth rate of everything slows down, but this includes the grass so fall means just a little less work for gardeners and farmers.
That being said, recent high winds knocked down some our tomato and bean trellises. Hopefully, we will salvage lots of bean and get them back upright, and the tomatoes will add nitrogen and volunteers to our compost pile so we won't feel like we lost them.
